Ivy ScurrUniversity of Newcastle
Ivy Scurr is a PhD student at UoN, as well as an environmental and social justice activist. She recently completed a Bachelor of Social Science Honours (first class) in Sociology and Anthropology, investigating the interactions between activism and community building in the Australian anti-capitalist environment movement. She was part of the core organising teams for the 2017 and 2018 Students of Sustainability conferences that brought together hundreds of activists and students from around the country to share skills and knowledge about environmental and social justice issues. She has also been an active member and volunteer of NUSA (Newcastle University Student’s Association) since 2007, and throughout this time has worked within and across a number of collectives including: Enviro, Women’s, Queer, Education, Welfare, and Media.
Ivy has been involved in environmental and social justice activism on and off campus in Newcastle and nationally for several years. These have included campaigns with Fossil Free UoN pushing for the university to divest from fossil fuels, Students Against Detention which successfully got the university to end its services contract with Broadspectrum/Transfield – the folks running offshore detention centres, and a Greenpeace supported campaign that successfully lead to CommBank ruling out further investing in new fossil fuel projects. Most recently she has been working with NTEU staff and student associations at UoN supporting the global student climate strikes. |
